Three of some of my favorite 90’s Movies…… i’m drowning in nostalgia. (Story line descriptions taken from IMDB.)

Storyline

Romantic comedy about six of Seattle’s young people, most of whom live in the same apartment building and whose lives revolve around the city’s ever-expanding music scene. The inter-related stories about each character’s progress through the singles scene are intriguing and often very funny, and the soundtrack is a grunge fanatic’s dream, with the likes of Soundgarden, Pearl Jam and  Mudhoney. Written by Dirk Gruhlke

Storyline

A day in the life of the employees of Empire Records. Except this is a day where everything comes to a head for a number of them facing personal crises - can they pull through together? And more importantly, can they keep their record store independent and not swallowed up by corporate greed? Written by Anonymous

Storyline

In this study of Generation X manners, Lelaina, the valedictorian of her college class, camcords her friends in a mock documentary of posteducation life. Troy is her best friend, a perpetually unemployed musical slacker. Vickie is a manager at the Gap who worries about the results of an AIDS test, while Sammy has problems grappling with his sexuality. When Lelaina meets Michael, an earnest video executive who takes her homemade video to his MTV-like station, she must decide what she values—the materialism of yuppie Michael or the philosophical musings of Troy. Written by Rick Gregory

The Crocodile. Home of the Seattle Sound. (R.I.P)

I’m still on the subject of grunge……I heard rumors that one of most famous music venues in Seattle closed down, and sadly the rumors were true. It shut down in December of 2007, 10 months after I moved to New York. It is being rebuilt now, but It will never be the same. Nirvana, R.E.M and Pearl Jam used to play here.  Here’s a video of Nirvana playing at The Crocodile back in 1992.

GROWING up in the middle of GRUNGE …..(and Alternative music)

Yuba City, California….early 90’s

There was still a remnants of 80’s music and fashion still lingering, but new sounds were developing and I felt it all the way in my little town of Yuba City. The happy, bright, neon colored 80’s tones were starting to fade away.  I was lucky that my mom was able to afford cable, otherwise my windows to the music world would’ve never existed. I was a seed in the MTV music generation and my older brother of 7 years was my shepherd throughout these experiences. Hip-Hop never left our souls, ever, but we were not against exploring new sounds. As kids we had nothing, so music was our escape.

Even though we grew up really poor, we were pretty happy kids. I remember coming home from school and my brother would be glued to the TV watching live performances on MTV. Grunge was all over the media and Seattle was now on the map. As a happy kid listening to this music, it sounded dark and eerie to me, but somehow I was curious and drawn to it.

One music video that really stands out to me: Soundgardens “Black Hole Sun”. That video used to scare the shit out of me…..but I liked it. Same with R.E.M’s “Losing my Religion”. Losing my religion didn’t scare me necessarily but, this song about obsession and flashes of androgyny were haunting….and again, I liked it.

The mood of this music carried me to Anchorage, Alaska where I moved to in 1996. I was 15. It was sad leaving the town I grew up in. This meant making new friends and dramatic change, so again, I turned to music. Some how, all of these genres of music i listened to would end up to be for-shadowing of where I would be living later on in life. I ended up in Seattle in 2004……and now in New York. (In relation to Hip-Hop)

The Rise and Fall of Freestyle Music

When I was a kid, I lived in Yuba City, California and my cousins from San Francisco were into Hip-Hop and Breakdancing. Every time my brothers and I would visit them, they would teach us how to dance and expose us to new music. My older brother is a music fiend as well, so he always had the newer shit. Especially when it came to Hip-Hop and Freestyle. A radio station in Sacramento (KSFM 102.5) Had DJ’s that would play the hottest Latin Freestyle tracks back to back, So my brothers, cousins and I would tune in and battle in our garage downstairs. So many memories…….Us younger kids in our family grouped together to form our B-Boy Crew called Planet Rock Crew (after the song obviously) Wow, I was 14 then!

If you were latino growing up in New York, or filipino growing up in California, OR a b-boy during the 80’s, early 90’s…then you should be familiar with this genre of music.

Freestyle also dubbed Latin freestyle, or Latin Hip-Hop is a genre of music that was created off of or derived from a song called Planet Rock by Afrika Bambaataa one of the most important electronic songs in electronic music history. When Disco was starting to suck and die out, electro was becoming popular. If you mix electro with disco vocals written in minor chords and lyrics of heartbreak, you get FREESTYLE! New York, Florida and California had huge followings. The Filipinos in the Bay Area in California embraced freestyle as well and came out with a style that was close to a genre called High NRG…… The MTV generation, and Hip-Hop music were the cause of freestyles demise…..but the sound still lives on underground.
